Balfour Beatty Vinci has an exciting opportunity for a Tunnel Pit Boss to join our team to work across our Long Itchington Wood Tunnel & Bromford Tunnel sites.

Role Purpose:

The position of Pit Boss (Tunnels) is required to cover the scope of tunnelling works for Sub Lot 1 for Stage 2 and will be reporting to the BBV Tunnel Works Manager. The Tunnel Pit Boss will be operating from a section of works within Sub Lot 1 e.g. starting with the construction of the Long Itchington Wood North Portal Tunnel Main Compound and progressing onto the LIW and BRO tunnelling operations. The recruitment is necessary in order to deliver the construction works in Sub Lot 1. Also, the Tunnel Pit Boss will be responsible for managing a section of works according to a specific discipline (tunnel), interfacing with other teams /crews and managing a various working crews and / or sub-contractors within the same discipline. Working with the Operations, Management, Health & Safety and Commercial Teams, Subcontractors and occasional interface with the Client.

The Tunnel Pit Boss is required to support the Tunnel Construction Manager, Superintendents and Tunnel Works Manager to coordinate the safe delivery of all operational activities on site, ensuring Health and Safety, Quality and Environment needs are met along with programme and budget requirements. Take the lead with front line supervisors and the supply chain to ensure BBV values are built into their culture and BBV objectives are achieved.
What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

    Project professional image of self and the company
    Set personal example and promote best practise in safety, quality and environment
    Comply with all company policies and procedures
    Build and develop the team to deliver all aspects of the project requirements
    Ensure inspection regimes are completed in accordance with requirements and timescales
    Assist line manager / engineers with programming and production of method statements
    Contribute to weekly meetings and QF regarding safety, progress, resourcing, costs and programme
    Ensure all statutory weekly or daily inspections are carried out, e.g. weekly safety and environment tours
    Assist and promote the development of the workforce e.g. identify training requirements, review the performance of the workforce and ensure delivery of toolbox talks
    Ensure high standard of quality on the works to at least meet the specification requirements
    Responsible for the daily coordination of the TBM tunnelling, including tunnel logistics and support services
    Responsible for the daily coordination of the SCL tunnelling, including tunnel logistics and support services
    Direct authority over the tunnel and pit bottom workspace, and ultimate control of access to tunnel works
    Responsible for ensuring the correct and safe operation of tunnel equipment
    Coordinate with the Mechanical and Electrical Teams to arrange repairs and facilitate maintenance works

    Act in the best interests of the project in all dealings with the Client, suppliers, workforce and public

Commercial:

    Recording of bulk supply materials
    Daily diary record
    Have full understanding of procedures governing how we manage risk
    Understand the effect of risk on the programme and financial outcome of the project
    Be aware that risks are shared under the contract and which ones are relevant to your particular element of your project
    Read procedures and guidance and receive explanation/discussion from the works manager
    Ensure that any outstanding snagging/defect correction work is notified to your Line Manager

Who we're looking for

Experience and knowledge:

    Successful experience within similar tunnelling environment.
    Good knowledge of safety legislation and environment issues.
    Thorough knowledge of TBM and SCL tunnelling procedures and working methods.
    Knowledge of best practise in safety, quality and environment.
    Experience in completing effective Performance and Development Reviews
    Experience of maintaining good relations with Client representatives
    Knowledge of government legislation and JV policy on all matters relating to safety and environment.
    Must be able to lead the shift tunnel team / crew(s)

This role requires individuals with strong up to date legislation knowledge and industry best practice in all aspects. The individual will have an understanding of the principles of framework procurement and experience within the most current forms of procurement. Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with team members under time pressure.
The individual should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer and the BBV business.

Must have required qualifications, skills, behaviours and attributes:

    NVQ Level 4 - Construction Site Supervision or similar
    SMSTS Certificate
    CSCS Supervisor Card
    TSTS (Tunnel Safety Training Scheme)
    Willing to take on further training as needed e.g. emergency rescue, lift supervisor, temporary works supervisor etc.
