St Petersburg's Orlovsky tunnel under the Neva is not abandoned but became a long term project

    Bogdan A. Dašić

Kanoner writes the story of planned Orlovsky tunnel under the Neva.

A crossing over the Neva has been discussed since the 1940s. With two alternatives of a bridge and a tunnel. A bridge is not wanted. Water vessels may hit the bridge supports because of sharp turn of the Neva channel.

Kanoner writes later city entered into a concession agreement with LLC Nevskaya Concession Company (of First Quantum group) for construction of the Orlovsky tunnel. A two level and three lanes at each direction. But in 2012, the contract was terminated.

Later it appeared that the tunnel entrance space was reserved for Leningrad Siege and Defence Museum and later given to Supreme Court.

Despite of this city does not give up. In city master plans of St. Petersburg the Orlovsky tunnel is kept but sometime between 2039–2048.
