Dresden - Prague High Speed Railway Tunnel is planned as a part of the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T). more specifically the Eastern-Mediterranean Corridor which connects the North and Baltic Sea with the Mediterranean and Black Sea. As such, it is funded by The European Union to large extend. The planned tunnel will connect the two important cities under the Ore Mountains via twin-tubes allowing speeds up to 230 kilometers per hour.

The agreement on the construction of the high-speed railway line linking Dresden and Prague has been signed last year by the representatives of Czech and German Transport Ministries. It has also been agreed that the Deutsche Bahn, the German Railways would be responsible for the design of the tunnel.

The potential route involves going through several geological layers, requires boring under densely populated and ecologically fragile places. Therefore Deutsche Bahn is conducting a through subsoil examination before deciding on options (full tunnel or partially above the ground alternatives). The length of the tunnel will be determined also by the soil study, though the likely length is 26 kilometers for each tube.

The new railway line will drop the current travel time of 2 hours 15 minutes between Dresden and Prague to a mere 52 minutes. The tunnel will also increase the freight traffic in the route and help the competitiveness of the German ports.

Once the route is finalized, then it will be presented to the German parliament and probably to the Czech parliament.
