    Translated from Italian (CSC release).

Csc Costruzioni sa (Webuild Group) has been awarded the contract worth approximately 87 million CHF (approximately 80 million Euros) for the construction of the North tunnel of the Gotthard Motorway Tunnel, a 4 km long access tunnel for the 2nd Gotthard tube. To carry out the works, which will contribute to developing sustainable mobility in the heart of the Alps, together with Webuild and its Swiss subsidiary csc Costruzioni sa (with a 40% stake) will be present in the consortium Implenia (40%) and Frutiger (20% ).

The N02 Second Gotthard pipe - lot 243 project, commissioned by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), involves the construction of various excavations to service the main tunnel. The lot also includes a large logistic cave for an underground concrete plant, the preliminary excavation for the second tunnel pipe and various material handling installations. The start of construction is scheduled for spring 2021 and the works will last approximately 2 and a half years. The award of lot 243, subject to res judicata, precedes the publication of the tender for the two largest lots by a few months.

CSC has already been involved in the construction of two of the five main lots of the Gotthard Base Railway Tunnel, which extends between the northern portal of Erstfeld, in the Canton of Uri, and the southern one of Bodio, in the Canton of Ticino. CSC also worked on the Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km long), inaugurated last September, which completes the lowland railway for passenger and freight traffic across the Alps. Thanks to the construction of these two major works, the new north-south axis allows more efficient and sustainable connections (less than 2 hours between Zurich and Lugano, about 3 hours from Zurich and Milan), bringing Switzerland closer to Italy.

The San Gottardo, with its 57 kilometers, is currently the longest railway tunnel in the world but this record is destined to be surpassed, once completed, by the Brenner Base Tunnel which with its total 64 km will become the railway link in longest underground in the world. A sustainable mobility project that will improve transport possibilities in Europe and of which the Webuild Group itself is building three of the main construction sites: the Mules 2-3 lot, the main section of the Italian side of the Brenner Base Tunnel, the lot Tulfes-Pfons, which consists of carrying out underground civil works, and the Under-crossing of the Isarco River, which forms the southernmost part of the Brenner Base Tunnel before entering the Fortezza station. In recent days, the Group has also been declared the highest bidder, again in consortium with Implenia, for the design and construction of the section of a new high-capacity line of approximately 22.5 km in continuation of the Brenner base tunnel, between Fortezza and Ponte Gardena, for a value of 1.07 billion euros.
