GDDKiA has released the pictures (all photographs images here) and information on the progress of Świna tunnel construction. GDDKiA (Generalna Dyrekcja Dróg Krajowych i Autostrad - literally: General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways) is Poland's state authority responsible for the national roads.
According to GDDKiA information, there is a very good progress at Świna tunnel with average penetration rate of 10 meters per day. This average has been achieved, despite the 1,5 meter penetration in early startup days. Already 130 meters of the tunnel has been bored.
The tunnel is constructed by contractors PORR and GULERMAK (the tunnelling expert company) which uses CREG Tunnel Boring Machine.
GDDKiA gives the information that in approximately 320 meters, the machine will have a stop. Before entering the Świna Strait, service works will be carried out on the shield. The total length of the bored tunnel will be 1.44 km, and the boring itself is expected to end this fall. Further works related to the furnishing of the tunnel will continue for the next year. Completion of the investment is scheduled for September next.
The CREG TBM will lay 785 rings in total for the Świnoujście tunnel. The width of individual rings varies between 1.5 or 2 meters.
