Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel Breakthrough

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has completed excavation of the 2.5-mile long Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel, a significant milestone in the $1bn effort to repair leaks in the longest tunnel in the world. Completion was marked when the JV Kiewitt-Shea’s 21.6-foot diameter Robbins TBM broke through a wall of shale bedrock nearly 700 feet beneath the Town of Wappinger in Dutchess County. Excavation of the tunnel was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.
