Colombia -- Traffic through the Oriente Tunnel tripled, already expansion is being talked

El Colombiano writes that last month, the average traffic per day of the Túnel de Oriente road concession reached 33,000 vehicles, exceeding the pre-pandemic 27,000 figure after inauguration in August 2019.

The concession for the tunnel runs until 2039 but already an expansion is being considered (I posted about this a short one a week ago). Both  Odinsa (the main shareholder of the concession) and the president of the SAI (Antioquia Society of Engineers and Architects) think, an expansion is necessary.

Mauricio Ossa, president of Odinsa, says that the expansion of the tunnel will be defined at the beginning of 2022. It will be then better known how to put into operation the second tube of the tunnel.

The Túnel de Oriente connects the metropolitan area of the Aburrá Valley with the San Nicolás Valley, where the José María Córdova International Airport is located. It is a road tunnel between Medellín and Rionegro. Its inauguration took place August 15, 2019,2 after a series of delays due mainly to leaks that were found during construction. With a length of 8,2km, Túnel de Oriente is the second longest road tunnel in Latin America, after the La Línea Tunnel.
