Cheaper tunnel option & snowfall divides Norway in two. Literally.

Another avalanche on the E6 over Kvænangsfjellet and the road is closed for days. Literally dividing Norway into two. Mayors of Nordreisa and Kvænangen municipalities are worried about the current tunnel plans. They want a tunnel also in Kvænangsfjellet, writes NRK.

A tunnel in Kvænangsfjellet was planned in 2017. First Statens vegvesen got the contract but in 2019 it was given to Nye Veier. Originally 3 tunnels were planned. But at the end the corners cut to build 2 tunnels which are 400 meters shorter than the planned. Hence the landslides. Mayors say, as seen, with a shorter tunnel, the roads are still closed because of landslides and avalanches. Nye Veier says they will investigate the situation in Mettevollia tunnel where the last landslide happened and determine if it poses a risk of happening often. Depending on the study they will take measures.
