England's National Highways has to spend £7.3 million for works in the disused 1.4 mile long Queensbury Tunnel, instead of £550,000 it would cost, should the tunnel had not been flooded.
And why did it flood? Because, allegedly, National Highways failed to pay the £50 annual rent on a pumping station which kept the tunnel dewatered.
Now the Queensbury Tunnel Society is running a campaign to save the tunnel and repurpose it instead of National Highways' plans to partially infill it.
