Barberino di Mugello, Friday 18 March 2022 - A strategic project for the country's viability and its economy comes to light, a unique work from an engineering, construction and technological point of view, a cutting-edge laboratory in terms of technical and construction skills , which anticipates a new approach in view of the great infrastructural challenges facing the country.

Starting tomorrow afternoon, the new three-lane section of the A1 between Barberino di Mugello and Firenze Nord heading south will be open to traffic: 17.5 km of new route, created as a natural continuation of the Variante di Valico.

The work was presented this morning in Barberino in the presence of the Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility, Enrico Giovannini, of the President and CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia Giuliano Mari and Roberto Tomasi, of the President of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani , the President of the Emilia Romagna Region Stefano Bonaccini, the Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Florence Dario Nardella, the Mayor of Barberino di Mugello, Giampiero Mongatti, the Mayor of Calenzano Riccardo Prestini and all the mayors of the area crossed.

The new infrastructure strengthens one of the busiest hubs in the country, increasing the capacity (from 4 lanes to 7 lanes) of the section, which sees the passage of over 100 vehicles per minute on average during peak hours. Thanks to this work, the greater fluidity of traffic will result in savings for the community of 1.5 million hours a year, reducing travel time by 30%: the containment of queues and stop and go phenomena will also generate a reduction of CO2 emissions quantifiable in -2,000 tons per year. An average of 500 women and men worked every day for its realization, for a total of 6 million hours worked.

The new section includes a total of 17.5 km - of which 10 km underground - three 3.75 meter lanes, plus an emergency lane on the open sections. The project is part of the broader development plan of the Tuscan node of the Autostrada del Sole, between the Barberino and Valdarno junctions, which covers a total of 120km.

The project presented today, with a total investment of about 1 billion euros, is characterized by 4 main infrastructures, two tunnels and two viaducts: in this context, the Santa Lucia stands out, the longest 3-lane tunnel built in Europe (approx. 7,750 m), equipped with advanced high-tech systems and excavated with the aid of the largest TBM cutter ever used in the Old Continent.

In addition to the two new archways of the infrastructure, artificial access tunnels (north and south), the motorway platform (in the sections outside the tunnels) were built, together with the installation of technical cabins and ventilation, mitigation systems fire, remote control. The arches envisaged in the project in fact provide the most innovative safety equipment for digital monitoring of real-time traffic and for emergencies, with state-of-the-art automated systems. The tunnel, in fact, is characterized by the important presence of innovative technologies that guarantee high safety standards and better management of traffic and critical events. The Baccheraia Viaduct (135 m) and the Marinella Viaduct (550 m) were also built on the new route, as well as the Boscaccio Gallery (2,000 m).

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility, the project is also characterized by a highly sustainable approach, capable of combining the construction of a large project with the management and respect for the territory and the environment that hosts it. An example of this is the project for the construction of the Bellosguardo service area (with the involvement of Arpat and CNR), envisaged as part of the upgrading of the section, which provides for the total reuse of approximately 4 million cubic meters of earth excavated from the excavation of tunnels and also intended to cover
