Only one bidder for the construction of the Zonda Tunnel (San Juan, Argentina)

The tender envelopes for the construction of the Zonda Tunnel have been opened at the Government House. The opening has been headed by the deputy governor Roberto Gattoni. He talked about the benefits the tunnel would bring to the region. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Works and Services, Julio Ortiz Andino,the Secretary of Housing and Habitat, Robert Garcés, the Secretary of Works Carlos, Rollán Oro, Undersecretary of Projects and Tenders Andrés Zini, the Chief Government Notary, Mayra Mancin, Director of Projects and Tenders, Eugenio Montes, Director of Provincial Roads, Juan Magariños, comptroller of the Court of Appraisals Omar Blanco and the interested business people.

As was somewhat expected, only one company had presented their offer/presentation for the construction of the 1100 meter long tunnel: Queiroz Galvao Construction S.A.

The Zonda tunnel will link Rivadavia and Zonda, both departments lie to the west of the city of San Juan. The 1100 meter long road tunnel will have two lanes. One in each direction. In addition to road transport, the tunnel will also house inside the main pipeline of the Gran San Juan Aqueduct, the gas pipeline designed to supply the departments involved, as well as fiber optics and electrical power lines for the area.

The project is financed by the IDB (Inter American Development Bank). IDB document describes the project as "Construction of a road tunnel 1,011 meters long through the Sierra de Marquesado, including its links with existing routes, in the Province of San Juan, Republic Argentina". 

In detail, the IDB document says

"The work includes the elaboration of the Executive Project and Detail Engineering, and the subsequent construction of a 1,011 meter long road tunnel, located about 16 kilometers away from the capital city of the province of San Juan (Argentina), which will cross the Sierra de Marquesado, at an approximate height of 780 masl. This tunnel will have two lanes, one for each direction of traffic, and will unite the departments of Rivadavia and Zonda. The project also includes the construction of two access roads, one that will link the east portal with the RP No. 14, and another that will link the west portal with RP No. 38, both totaling one approximate length of 4.9 km."

The Government of the Province of San Juan had requested the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through of the Federal Trust Fund for Regional Infrastructure (FFFIR), a loan to finance the cost of the Project "Construction of the Zonda Tunnel and its Accesses". The budget is AR $5,021,299,807.26 VAT included.

According to plans, the construction will start in July 2022 and will be completed after 24 months of work.
