The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) advances in the culmination of the modernization works of the Perales del Río tunnel in Madrid after investing 8.6 million from European recovery funds
The CEO of Seitt, Cristina Moreno, visits the infrastructure and reports on the improvements made after a year of work on the facilities. All the lanes have been opened to traffic when the permanent closures are lifted and the works are expected to conclude this September. The objective of the actions is to reinforce the road, circulation and safety conditions of the tunnel located on the M-50 motorway in the capital. The intervention is included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which will allocate up to 343 million of NextGenerationEU funds to update the tunnels of the State Highway Network.
07-07-2022 The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), through the State Society of Land Transport Infrastructures (Seitt), starts the last phase of the modernization works and reinforcement of safety and circulation conditions of the Perales tunnel del Río on the M-50 (Madrid), with the aim of finishing them definitively this September. Not surprisingly, this week the permanent lane closures have been removed and the final performances will begin.
This has been verified by the general director of Seitt, Cristina Moreno, who this morning has visited the tunnel works and has been able to verify the improvements made in the infrastructure after a year of work and an investment of 8.67 million euros (without VAT ) of the NextGenerationUE European recovery funds. The final budget for the work has increased by 10% with respect to the formalization of the contract due to the application of the exceptional price review measures approved by the Government to respond to the increase in costs and guarantee the completion of the interventions, among others stuff.
The intervention is included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which contemplates investing up to 343 million euros (excluding VAT) from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) to modernize 129 tunnels of the State Highway Network distributed throughout the national geography.
A comprehensive renovation of the tunnel
The Perales del Río tunnel, which registers an average traffic of 80,000 vehicles per day, is located at kilometer point (pk) 39+650 of the M-50 motorway in Madrid and is 690 meters long and has two independent tubes, one for each direction of traffic, with four lanes of 3.50 meters wide each.
The actions carried out include waterproofing work to prevent water seepage, coating to improve aesthetics and perception of light inside, widening and improving the sidewalks and the fitting out of a new drainage network for toxic liquids.
With regard to safety interventions, median crossings have been adapted and a mobile barrier has been installed, also improving sidings and all vertical and emergency signaling elements, beacons and defenses have been renewed.
In addition, several improvements have been made, both outside and inside the emergency exits, with the installation of fire doors, an overpressure ventilation system to prevent smoke from entering in the event of a fire, and the entire normal lighting and guidance to promote evacuation needs. The entrance from the tunnel has also been adapted for people with reduced mobility, among other measures necessary to adapt the facility to the safety and traffic requirements set out in Royal Decree 635/2006.
Incident monitoring and traffic management in real time
Likewise, new remote stations have been incorporated in the existing control center that allow for a backup system in case of failure of the main system and a new Centralized Management Application has been installed to provide traffic monitoring in real time and remote control of incidents through the equipment installed in the tunnels and open-air sections.
The new light signaling in the tunnels will allow the operator of the Control Center to inform drivers about the state of the road, risk situations and the protection measures that must be adopted to minimize damage in the event of unforeseen scenarios, facilitating the management of the tunnels, their accesses and lanes, by reinforcing the equipment related to the variable messaging panels.
