Norway new tunnel contracts 11 November 2022 press release

Norway Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) announces new tunnel contracts involving the Ring 1 Hammersborg Tunnel project and the Vaterland Tunnel.

Tunnel contract out in the market

The contract for the Ring 1 Hammersborg Tunnel project and the Vaterland Tunnel (Rv. 162) on Friday 11 November was announced in the market.

    Background

Based on the regulatory work for the reconstruction of the Government Quarter, it was assumed that measures had to be taken on the Hammersborg Tunnel to obtain sufficient security for the new ministry building.

The Hammersborg Tunnel must be rebuilt in connection with the work on the Government Quarter, and as a result of this rebuilding is upgraded to today's standard. The work on the Vaterland tunnel will be carried out as an ordinary upgrade project. The work on the tunnels will be carried out in the same contract because the traffic system of the two tunnels is interconnected and therefore the tunnels cannot be closed separately. The most important changes from today's road system

The Hammersborg Tunnel, which today consists of several composite culvert systems (cast concrete tunnels), is built as a continuous new culvert from Akersgata and east to Møllergata. Large parts of today's route are lowered, and the tunnel is extended to the east by approx. 100 meters.

The day zone between the tunnels is halved to approx. 70 m in new situation, compared to approx. 140 m today. The ramps to and from the street network at the Vaterland tunnel's west portal are lowered compared to the current situation.

The Vaterland tunnel will be about 40 m shorter than today, as today's superstructure at Vestre Portal is removed.

Ramp connections to Akersgata, Hospitalsgata and Mariboes gate are removed.

Arcade for pedestrian traffic is being built within the facade of the quarter Møllergata 24/Hammersborggata 17 (Megazone) for pedestrian traffic between Mariboes gate and Møllergata. Sidewalks along the People's House are removed and replaced with arcade for pedestrian traffic within the facade.

    The Vaterland tunnel is upgraded.
