This 18,7km Apice - Hirpinia stretch of the Napoli - Bari high-speed railway line is itself a part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Railway Corridor of the European TEN-T network.

On this stretch, 3 tunnels of total 12km is going to be built. Grottaminarda tunnel is 1990meter long. The whole thing will cost 628 million euros.

The 12,5m diameter CREG Tunnel Boring Machine 'Aurora' will do the boring. The same TBM will later be used to bore the Melito tunnel.

18.7km Apice - Hirpinia section of the new Naples - Bari high-speed/high-capacity line.

This is what the contractor Webuild Group says about the project:

"on the Naples-Bari line, the high-speed, high-capacity railway that will cut travel times for people and goods between Puglia and Campania. In particular, at the construction sites of the Apice-Hirpinia section, in the province of Avellino, as scheduled, operations are currently underway for the excavation by TBM of the Grottaminarda Tunnel, one of the three tunnels to be built on the more than 18-kilometre section that will cross the Apennines. The tunnel will have an overall length of 1,990 metres. The TBM, which has a cutting head over 12 metres in diameter and is the largest currently in operation in Italy, will excavate an average of 15 metres per day in the direction of Apice, where it is expected to arrive in early 2024".
