Consortium of Züblin (owned by Strabag) and Max Bögl have finished tunnelling of total 56 kilometers-long tunnelling in Stuttgart 21 project.

Stuttgart 21 is in Germany a part of the Stuttgart–Augsburg railway and within also part of Trans-European Network (Paris - Vienna line). When the project was announced, there were many protests with confrontations between the police forces and the demonstrators. In 2017, German state broadcaster DW had called the Stuttgart 21 Project "Germany's Other Engineering Fiasco" (after Berlin's BER airport) and a "sinkhole for public money". This is why successfully reaching to this milestone is important.

My translation of press release in German:

Stuttgart 21 project: Deutsche Bahn successfully drove all the project of the project. In total, the tunnelers dug around 56 kilometers of tunnels. With today's last tunnel bitch in the new airport tunnel, a historical milestone of the Stuttgart 21 project has been reached.

The end of the tunnelling was ceremoniously committed by high-ranking representatives of Deutsche Bahn, the Federal, State and Local Policy, the European Commission, the Stuttgart Airport and the construction industry with other guests of honor.

Berthold Huber, infrastructure board of Deutsche Bahn: “56 kilometers of tunnels, built in the middle of the big city, under the fair, in the middle of an airport site, under the Neckar, under the television tower - the challenges were numerous. Now the tunnel is completed. The tunnelers can be proud of themselves! Your work underground is essential for the mobility turnaround, from which millions of people and freight transport benefit. ”

Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Digital and Transport: “Anyone who observes the construction progress here inevitably is an impression of the entire work S21: Highly complex traffic planning and engineering create a high -performance infrastructure with smart technology, of which passengers on site are caused by more and better connections will benefit and which we have a decisive step in the next stage of the Germany Bring closer. "

Winfried Hermann, Minister of Transport in the State of Baden-Württemberg: “A traffic hub is created at Stuttgart Airport and at the State Fair. All modes of transport, from the aircraft over the car, long-distance bus, S- and subway, to long-distance and regional traffic, will be linked here. This is how traffic turns can succeed! That is why I am happy about the completion of the tunnel tuning at S21, so an important milestone for connecting the Stuttgart Airport is achieved. Our thanks go to the tunnellers, engineers and planners, because despite technical progress, tunnel construction is still exhausting and not harmless today. ”

Herald Ruijters, director of investments, innovative and sustainable traffic The European Commission: "The last tunnel is an important milestone of the Stuttgart 21 project. Every step brings us closer to us: a modern, multimodal traffic node in Stuttgart, which not only connects the city, the region and the country, but also Europe - From the Atlantic in the west to the Black Sea in the east. The new geopolitical situation in the east of Europe shows how much such projects and investments are necessary to better network Europe. Citizens and companies will benefit from a climate -neutral and sustainable rail network. ”

Dr. Frank Nopper, mayor of the state capital Stuttgart: “The construction of the eight tunnels for the Stuttgart 21 project was a huge challenge for tunnellers and engineers because of the Stuttgart Kessellage and the Mineralwassers, but also for population and resident. Now that light appears at the end of the eighth tunnel, we go to the home stretch with great confidence in the Stuttgart 21 project. ”

Carsten Poralla, Managing Director of Non-Aviation at Stuttgart GmbH Airport: “We are very pleased that we celebrate this tunnel bitch together today. The fact that both tunnel tubes are now completed to the airport is a giant step on the way to the long -distance railway stop at the airport. As a civil engineer, I know what the Mineurs have provided for an immense performance. The airport station is of fundamental importance for our traffic hub, because it improves the emmissions -free and climate-friendly accessibility of the state airport enormously for many people. ”

Jörg Rösler, member of the board, Strabag SE: “The connection of the airport to the Stuttgart - Ulm new line. About this tunnel is an essential milestone as part of the Infrastructure project Stuttgart 21. with the client side as well as in Argen, such as between Züblin, Max Bögl and Strabag. We would like to thank you for what has been done so far our client of the DB PSU and all project participants. ”

Dr. Arina Freitag, tunnel pat and Chief Financial Officer Tennet Holding BV: “As a tunnel godmother, it fulfills me with great pleasure that this project is progressing successfully. The last tunnel blow-up is an important milestone-not only for Stuttgart, but for all of Germany. We send an important signal today: the expansion of the infrastructure in Germany is progressing. As a former managing director of Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH and today's CFO of an infrastructure operator like Tennet Such projects, because only with a modern and powerful infrastructure do we secure the future viability of Germany in the long term and sustainable. ”

The tunnel of Stuttgart 21 As part of the Stuttgart 21 project, eight tunnels were dug, most of which consist of two tubes:

    • Bad Cannstatt Tunnel
    • Feuerbach tunnel
    • Airport Tunnel
    • Filder tunnel
    • Obertürkheim tunnel
    • S-Bahn tunnel between Mittnachtstraße stop and the S-Bahn station Hauptbahnhof
    • S-Bahn tunnel Rosenstein
    • Untertürkheimer Kurve tunnel

All of these tunnels are completely excavated. The rails are already in several tunnels: more than 60 kilometers of solid roads have so far been installed and sometimes extended to the future main train station approach.

Symbolical construction for the Stuttgart 21 tunnel was on December 4, 2013 in the Tunnel Obertürkheim. The tunnels were dug both with a large tunnel boring machine as well as with the so -called conventional construction, i.e. with excavators, blasting and chiseling. At times, more than a kilometer tunnel was driven per month.

Stuttgart 21 enables far -reaching improvements to the rail network in the southwest. The project creates the capacity for more trains and shorter travel times in nationwide long -distance transport and in local transport. Regional transport benefits In addition, many new transfer -free connections and improved connections to long -distance transport. Stuttgart 21 is also the prerequisite for the Germany cycle in the southwest.
