A new tunnel will be built for Tren Maya below the city of Mérida
Rogelio Jiménez Pons, the director of Mexico's National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) announced that the federal government wil build a railway tunnel from Mérida-Cancún highway (near Hacienda Teya), to La Plancha, in downtown Mérida for the Maya Train.
It would be about 4 kilometers long.
It lead to a big discussion maybe not in Mexico but certainly in Mérida.
The mayor expressed concerns about any technical risk or damage to the city by tunnel plan. Dozens of cenotes, or underground wells, exist under the city’s thin limestone surface.

Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marín, a senator of PRI, calls the proposed Tren Maya tunnel under the city of Mérida a 'fantasy'.
He said it was not in the original plan and mocked the say it was introduced now.
