What is happening for Wellington's transport? Not much on the extra Mount Victoria Tunnel side... The new Mt Victoria tunnel and an underground bypass near the Basin Reserve are not scheduled to be built until well after 2030. The Wellington Mayor Andy Foster's push to get the Mt Victoria tunnel project brought forward meets some resistance from some of Foster's own councillors.
The tunnel is supported by the National Party which tries to look ahead of the Labour in infrastructure investments.
Infrastructure investment plans are usual pre-election season competition in New Zealand. Labour started with a hefty $6.8 billion transport package. National is trying to figure it out how to up it in a credible way.
One of the ways for National to score is by trying to bring forward the date for the construction of the the $700 extra Mt VIctoria tunnel project. It is currently planned to start somewhere in 2029 and certainly such a late date will not cut it for National to win the votes for this election.
Although the National pledges upping the government's sharing of the project costs, getting the approval of more than one local governments will be tricky.
ANALYSIS: National backs Mt Victoria tunnel project to woo Wellington voters after Labour's big roading announcements.
Mt Victoria tunnel remains at the top of the Wellington Mayor Andy Foster's unfulfilled election promises.
Seven months on from being elected mayor, most of Andy Foster's pre-election pledges have not been fulfilled.
Suddenly Labour's Paul Eagle is a staunch proponent for the construction of the second Mt Victoria.
Votes, votes, votes.Politicians, politicians, politicians.

A good summary of the past, today and the future of the proposed second Mount Victoria Tunnel for Wellington.
The Mt Vic tunnel defines the border between Wellington Central and Rongotai. For both electorates, it could also define the election.
" A second Mt Victoria tunnel is a good idea, so long as it is bus-only, and extra space for walking and cycling would cost little more. "
I think the author has a point,
OPINION: If Wellington city's to get moving, the answer lies in more public transport capacity.
