San Sebastián tunnel breakthrough achieved
Under the city of San Sebastián in northern Spain, excavation completed for the 2.1 km Lugaritz to Miraconcha tunnel. For the another 2.1 km tunnel Miraconcha-Easo, excavation work had reached at 60% on 20 May.
The railway tunnel project is run by the Basque rail infrastructure company Euskal Trenbide Sarea. Construction had started in 2017.
On 5 June, during the ongoing excavation of the Miraconcha-Easo, a discontinuity in the rock (a cave) caused the sinking of the part of the basement floor of the residential building at Zubieta street nº 8.
People at both numbers 8 and 10 on Zubieta Street have been evacuated. Inspection revealed no structural damage to the buildings.
The sunken area has been filled with 20m3 of concrete. Also the tunnel front is stabilized to stop more water coming in.
San Sebastián's La Concha metro tunnel boring stopped until further measures taken.
People living at number 8 of Zubieta have returned back to their houses. Building at number 8 and also at 10 had been evacuated to a nearby hotel. Number 10 returned earlier and now the number 8 after buildings checked for any damage.
Now further investigation will be conducted underground on the soil. Until the completion, tunnel boring machine will not resume its work.
