The new mayor of Coquimbo, Pablo Herman, who took over as Lucía Pinto's replacement wants to explore the possibility of a shorter tunnel option for uniting the Chile and Argentina.
Reported by Diario de Cuyo press, Herman said "There are technical aspects of the tunnel layout itself, which is in parallel to a fault, and could be catastrophic. That is why it is important to study the engineering & feasibility further". Pablo Herman who was previously a Public Works minister, said, there is possibility of building a shorter tunnel 30 further south. The feasibility study of the tunnel will be put to tender at the end of the year to decide over route.
