Thousands continue their protests against Torino-Lyon High Speed Rail link via a 57,5 kilometer long tunnel under Alps

Protest against Torino - Lyon High Speed Rail Link with a tunnel under the Alps

Thousands of Italians continue their protests against the controversial high-speed Torino-Lyon railway link with 57,5 kilometre tunnel under the Alps.

The largest of the protests were held  in Piedmont, where the tunnel for the TAV (Treno Alta Velocità) starts.

Protestors say that it has less benefits than the cost, that France is going to benefit more than Italy from this link, that it will be an environment disaster, Along the route of the tunnel there are uraniun and asbestos reserves and the people against the tunnel are worried about the environment and health harms.

Italy's governing coalition is divided on it. Populist  '5 star movement' is against it but they are the junior partner in the government.  In Italian government Matteo Salvini's League supports the project and League pulls the string. Voters of 5 star movement call their party as traitors.

Embattled Italian construction companies lobby for the resumption of the project. Protesters protest but Italian government already informed European Parliament president David Sassoni that Italy is committed to the government. Recently EU has increased its share of funding from 40% to 55%.

"TAV (Treno Alta Velocità) "?? Sounds to me bastardized version of corresponding French acronym.

The very same protesting people will ride the trains running in this very tunnel when it is taken into operation. Have no doubt on it.

I can understand that the Five-star movement opposed this project mainly due to the cost, before they gave in to Salvini's far-right thug. On the other hand, I do not find others such as environmentalists no honest. Just a cause of keeping busy for such weekend-warriors. Once the project is completed, I can assure you that they will be among the first to use the tunnel.
