Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow held a press conference on Friday morning after a visit to the Package 2 project site in Bukit Gambar. He announced modification to original road project for the second package under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) from Air Itam to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway.

The Package 2 is an alternative toll -free bypass that will reduce travel time from current 40 minutes to 5 minutes to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway.

Now project has 20% tunnels. 6-KM bypass road Package Two covers 65 per cent of viaduct structures, a series of tunnels. A twin tunnel section in three parts of the alignment added. Three land tunnels will be built across hills of Island Park and Island Glades to continue to the Penang Bridge area.

Project is expected to be completed in January 2025.

According to Malaysian press (Sinar Harian), Penang Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia ("Gerakan" - liberal political party in Malaysia) chairman Oh Tong Keong questions government's decision. He asked `can the original feasibility report still be applicable to implement the newly announced project?".

Meanwhile implementation of the Air Itam Bypass project to Lim Chong Eu Highway (Package 2) is progressing without interruptions despite the mutual termination of the contract between Vertice Bh. and Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn. Bhd. (CZC) because construction is done by CZC itself without using other contractors.

In early 2019, CZC had awarded the Package 2 construction contract to Buildmarque Construction, a JV of Vertice Bhd. and Vizione Holdings Bhd.
