Ssangyong E&C to Prove Technological Prowess Again With Upcoming Completion of Its Second DTL project in Singapore

Among all construction sections of the Thomson East Coast Line (TEL) in Singapore, Ssangyong E&C’s T308 is considered the most challenging one. That is because the site is located under densely packed apartment buildings prone to residents’ complaints, and because the surrounding ground is weak as it consists of land reclaimed by filling a sandy beach. To tackle these challenges, the company has boosted construction efficiency by applying construction techniques that cater to local conditions and by actively engaging in communication with local residents. As a result, T308 is currently 88 percent complete and is set to be fully completed next year.

Stretching between Singapore’s Changi Airport and the downtown area, Thomson East Coast Line (TEL) is a major project initiated by the Singaporean government to eliminate dead zones not covered by subway lines. Contract T308 involves the construction of Marine Terrace station and a 1.78-kilometer stretch of underground tunnels. Ssangyong E&C secured this contract (worth USD 252 million) from the country’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) in 2016.

With its long presence in the Singaporean construction market, Ssangyong E&C’s technological prowess and safety management capability were well recognized even during the tender process of the T308 project. Despite not being the lowest bidder, the company won the contract against other global competitors by scoring high in non-price categories. In fact, back in March 2016, Ssangyong E&C successfully completed DTL 921, a section of the Downtown Line (DTL) that was considered the most challenging subway construction project in Singapore to date.

At the DTL 921 site, the company also achieved, for the first time in the world, 16.75 million accident-free man-hours, a level equivalent to zero serious accidents. With this feat, it received the Grand Prize at the Land Transport Excellence Awards (LTEA) 2016, thereby becoming the first sole recipient of an LTEA grand prize among Korean contractors.
