The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has awarded for 311,123 euros (VAT included) the modernization works and improvement of the road and circulation conditions of the Peña María tunnel, on the A-1 motorway, in the County of Treviño, in Burgos.

Although the infrastructure currently has favorable operating conditions, it is necessary to carry out this action to update its facilities and adapt them to the safety requirements with which it is sought to promote the development of a high-quality trans-European transport network in the entire Union by 2050.

The action, included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and financed from NextGenerationEU funds, is thus aimed at adapting the infrastructure to the safety and road requirements established in Royal Decree 635/2006, of May 26, as a result of the transposition of Directive 2004/54/CE of the European Parliament and of the Council, of April 29, 2004.

The PRTR has a budget of 357 million euros to adapt the tunnels to European regulations and to promote the protection of fauna and vulnerable users. Specifically, it will finance actions in tunnels of the State Highway Network (RCE) focused on improving emergency exits, signage, beaconing, lighting, ventilation, electrical installation, fire protection, drainage, communication or traffic management, etc.
