The board near the Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel entrance was falsely boasting “You are entering India’s first undersea tunnel. Built by L&T”.
This was despite the fact that the tunnel was not an undersea tunnel but instead it followed the shore line. As Boom reported "According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s largest 12.19 meter diameter tunnel is being constructed 20 meter below the shore of Arabian Sea..".
It is not clear whether it was the idea of BMC or the builder L&T to come up with such a claim.
Thanks to social media activists like Zoru Bhathena, the truth has prevailed and this strange situation has been corrected.
BMC has taken the right action and took down the signboard with the false claim. The new board says "The largest diameter tunnel constructed using TBM technology".
If the false claim was allowed to stay there, it would be a very unjust act to a future project which will indeed be India's first underwater tunnel.
This is a great project and great accomplishment as it is and it did not need false claims.
Thank you BMC.
When I first read your post I was angry. I was thinking you put down an important project. But you are very much right. It is very unjust to constructors of real underwater tunnels.
For example Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) TBM Kaveri has already bored under Adyar River.
Thanks.
