According to experts, Italy's tunnel infrastructure managed by Autostrade per l'Italia (Aspi) are not in compliance with the fire requirements, so much so that Italy risks an EU infringement procedure. Only after we see the parts of concrete falling own in tunnels like in the Berté tunnel of the A26 on December 30th 2019, inspections started being done.
It is said that the Ministry of Infrastructure (MIT) of Italy already knows these problems very well.
The European directive 2004/54, implemented in Italy in 2006, brings some safety requirements like ventilation, shelters, extinguishing systems lighting etc etc for tunnels longer than 500 meters. Italy had time to adapt until 30 April 2019 to adapt. This was not done. And what did the MIT try to do? Trying to get an extension to 2022 citing the high concentration of tunnels in Italy,
But in October 2019, Italy's MIT has been informed the European Union was launching the infringement procedure.
Maybe MIT will do something about the compliance with the European directive 2004/54 before more concrete falls off from tunnels like in Berté tunnel.
