Enbridge Energy will not delay appluing for permits for the Great Lakes Tunnel Project under the Straits of Mackinac, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tribal governments that oppose the project want Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to slow the process down. They say it’s impossible to prepare for public comment and official tribal consultations when most tribal staff are sheltering in place.

Opponents challenge Enbridge permit request amid COVID-19 travel limits.
opponents are arguing that the current stay-at-home order, brought about in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, makes it impossible to properly carry out the public comment procedures required for the approval of the application.
Worse, Enbridge wants Michigan regulators to declare that they don’t need state permission to construct a replacement pipeline deep beneath the Straits of Mackinac.
The energy giant has submitted a flurry of permit applications in its bid to replace the aging Line 5 oil and gas pipeline, sparking concerns from opponents who argue regulators should delay decisions until the coronavirus emergency ends.
It is too early for Enbridge to start celebrating. Their permit application process to build a tunnel underneath the Straits of Mackinac is put on hold. The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) finds some information is missing in the application.
Official reason for EGLE officials suspending the process for the permit sought by Enbridge to build a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac to house Line 5 is the issues with design and specifications, according to a letter released Wednesday.
