Croatian state road company Hrvatske Ceste announced that Austrian contractor Strabag began with the boring of main tube of Debeli Brijeg tunnel.
The Debeli Brijeg tunnel is part of Pelješac Bridge Project. The tunnel also has maintenance tube. Together with 499 metre long Kamenice tunnel, the 2,467 metre long Debeli Brijeg tunnel will feed the Pelješac Bridge.
The Pelješac Bridge Project will connect Southern Croatia to each other. Southern Croatia is divided into two because of Bosnia and Herzegovina's access strip to the Mediterranean sea at Neum. When you want to go to southern part of Croatia, you need to go through Bosnia and Herzegovina. With the help of Pelješac Bridge Project, Croatia will bypass Bosnia and Herzegovina.
European Union to finance the 85% of the costs of building Pelješac Bridge Project. Total cost of project is 420 million euro and European Union provided 357 million euro.
Most of the costs go to for building of the bridge. The bridge itself is built by Chinese company China Road and Bridge Corporation. Austrian Strabag only build tunnels and roads.
For the bridge, Chinese company won the contract with 2.08 billion HRK (273 million euro). Other bidders, an Italian-Turkish consortium had bid 2.55 billion HRK (334,5 million Euro) and Austria's Strabag 2.62 billion HRK (343,6 million Euro). They are amounts excluding VAT. Both Italian-Turkish partnership and Austrian Strabag had appealed to the tender results at Zagreb Administrative Court DKOM but rejected in 2016.

Strabag does the tunnel but it is written the most of the money was spent on the bridge. Guess what. The bridge construction work awarded to the Chinese company. Crazy that such big infrastructure works are handed over to China. Real crazy.
Strabag's bid was 70.6 million euro more than Chinese company. More than 25% more. Italian + Turkish company offered 61.5 million more than Chinese company.
Giving it to Austrians or Italian and Turks would be REAL tax money spill.
Look, when we give such infrastructure projects to Chinese companies, don't think them as only bridge project. We are not only sponsoring their construction companies. But also their steel mills. But also their building material factories. But also their construction machinery companies.
Giving such projects to Chinese countries rips Europe off its industries.
Bosnia & Herzegovina will join European Union probably at the time as Serbia. It is likely to happen at around 15 years of time. Building this bridge and tunnels takes around 5 years. In another 10 years this whole invested money will be gone down the drain.
That is the EU decision making for you.
When Europe awards such infrastructure projects to Chinese companies, Europeans are not only sponsoring their construction companies. But also their steel mills. But also their building material factories. But also their construction machinery companies.
Giving such projects to Chinese countries rips Europe off its industries.
614 Workers continue to work on the Pelješac Bridge. Coronavirus does not affect the progress with the construction.
