Together with the City of Copenhagen, Danish Ministry of Transport & Housing announced the metro and road plans in relation to the new island to be build to the east of Copenhagen called Lynetteholmen.
Copenhagen mayor Frank Jensen also emphasized the importance of the 10-11 kilometer long immersed road tunnel under Øresund. The new 4-lane road tunnel would connect Nordhavnen with the new island of Lynetteholmen and Amager. Minister says the immersed tunnel option "will not only be the cheapest solution, but also the most gentle for both nature and the residents of Amager, who will have less noise and excavation work"
The new feasibility studiy maps the economy and effect of three different proposals for metro service and nine proposals for the routing of an Eastern Ring Road from Nordhavn to Amagermotorvejen or Øresundsmotorvejen at the airport.
Currently there are several issues to be resolved for this immersed tunnel plan. One is that actually the preliminary studies say that the immersed tunnel may affect the marine and aquatic environment. This is likely to create backlash from locals who would like to bath in Amager's not so clean waters (Copenhagen has a habit of flushing its sewage to the sea now and then - though the flush point is it is near where the Little Mermaid statue lies).
Another issue is the funding. According to Danmarks Radio, the tunnel would cost around 20 Billion Danish Kroner and it needs to be financed by the state. Ministry says all this new infrastructure will be partly financed by development and land sales on new Lynetteholm. According to the ministry, urban development and land sales are expected to generate revenues in the order of DKK 17 to 23 billion. kroner.
According to the Ministry, with an area of 2.8 square kilometers, Lynetteholm will also create the opportunity for an urban development project with space for housing for 35,000 Copenhageners and as many jobs.
