Residents' Backlash worked: WestConnex contractors abandon blasting plan beneath houses

    Roger N.R. Denton

Sydney's inner west residents were told in July that some "controlled explosions" would be performed after they hit hard sandstone. This had created a lot of anxiety among the residents, as WestConnex has very bad track record when it comes to cracking houses over the the tunnels.

WestConnex is not only controversial with the cracks it created in homes, but also with dragging its feet in compensating for such damage. Given the news that some parts of those tunnels, especially those parts close to exit points are as close as six metres to homes, it might be more understandable why the residents are a bit uneasy about the earlier blasting plans underneath their homes.

This whole blasting plans, however reversed by public outcry, has been yet another bad publicity for premier Gladys Berejiklian's over-burget, delayed projects.
