Large exercise in the Rannersdorf tunnel - fire in the tunnel with a serious follow -up accident

Around 100 figures and emergency services tried the emergency; Exercise is successful

A car burns in the Rannersdorf tunnel. People are on the road to provide first aid. A subsequent Air Liquide Transport overlooks the end of the traffic jam. The consequence: a serious rear -end collision with injured people and the risk of leaving nitrogen. Two dangerous and challenging scenarios that neither car travelers nor the emergency services ever want to experience real, but which cannot be excluded. It is all the more important that emergency services are well prepared for emergencies. Around 100 voluntary figures and fire brigade, police and rescue workers as well as ASFINAG employees took part in this large exercise yesterday. "Such exercises are an absolute must," says Günter Rattei, head of ASFINAG tunnel management. “Our safety devices in the tunnel are highly modern, which has already proven itself in the real fire of a truck in 2019. However, the UM and Up is the smooth operating processing and good communication among those involved in every incident. Human lives depend on this. ”In addition to securing accident sites by the police and ASFINAG, the fire brigade in particular has a crucial role in such operations. Because even before the medical care of the accident victims can take place, it is important to assess the dangerous situation, to capture the sources of danger for the emergency services and to free the trapped people from the vehicles. But the check whether the alarm chain and communication work among each other are also an integral part of every exercise. The conclusion: all exercise focuses worked perfectly. This is confirmed by ASFINAG and the blue light organizations. Tunnel manager Rattei: "Everyone involved acted very professional and have proven that the collaboration works well in an extreme case."

Together for more security - all operations are under this motto. Communication between the different organizations is particularly important. The linchpin within ASFINAG are the regional traffic management centers and the national headquarters in Vienna-Inzersdorf in large events. The tunnel operating technology and the traffic manager are also included in missions. This large exercise in Lower Austria also took part: the district administration, the rescue organizations of the Red Cross Schwechat and Mödling, the volunteer fire brigades Schwechat, Rannersdorf, Kledering as well as Mannswörth and the Autobahn police Schwechat. The emergency services supported around 30 voluntary statists to practice a real scenario.

Exercises are required by law Grand exercises with all operational organizations have to take place in all tunnels that are longer than 500 meters. This year, 20 organized and guided operations are planned by ASFINAG.
