Asahi writes; in the Gifu Prefecture water levels are falling in the lakes and wells in a certain region of the prefecture.  This is the region where the tunnel construction is under way for the Chuo Shinkansen maglev railway line. It is built by Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) which confirmed the drying up of water.

These symptoms of environmental problem was warned about by the previous governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, Heita Kawakatsu. Kawakatsu had resisted the building of tunnels for exactly for this environmental disaster reason. He had to resign from governorship after an intense media campaign against him. People say JR Tokai's announcement of project delays which implicitly blamed the governor was last drop and he had to resign from his post 1.5 weeks later.
