NORTH CYPRUS WATER PROJECT

The island of Cyprus is poor in fresh water resources. Just as many islands have the problem. The Turkish part of the island (Turkish Republic of North Cyprus) is working on solution with the help of Türkiye.

It is hoped that the project will also supply water to the South Cyprus (Greek part).

It is a big project with many important milestones already completed.

First water is captured in Türkiye from the Manavgat river which normally flows into Akdeniz (mediterrenean). It is then stored in Alaköprü Dam (completed).

Then the water is conveyed from Türkiye to North Cyprus via an underwater suspension water pipeline. This 80 kilometer pipeline is already completed and functional. It is 250 meters below sea level.

Then this water is stored in Geçitköy Dam (completed) in North Cyprus.

This dam will provide 75 millon m3 water annually to North Cyprus. 38 Million m3 of this will be processed in the newly built refinement installations and will be used as drinking water. The remainin 37 million m3 water will be used for irrigation.

Then the water in this project will be conveyed to the fields at Güzelyurt and Mesarya fields via the newly built tunnel.
