Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of Canaries has already obtained all environmental permits to use explosives for excavation of the tunnels in Gran Canaria. Until now, contractors had been using mechanical means for excavation for the tunnels through the Faneque mountain range but progress has been slow. Only 150 meters of the total 5 kilometres has been excavated.

With the new permit excavation will speed up with explosives and will continue on 24-hour shifts.

Hopefully with the new technique the consortium of Acciona, Ferrovial Agroman, Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones and Bitumex will perform better to finish the tunnel in two years. The new road which will cost €152 million will shorten the travel time between La Aldea and Agaete to 12 minutes from current 25 minutes writes Qué!
