The reason for the subsidence of houses near the Willem Alexander tunnel in Limburg region of The Netherlands is the peat underground.
Limburger writes that "at least" 32 houses in Heer of Maastricht had subsided after the construction of the tunnel. The reason for the subsidence has been established as the groundwater having been pumped out during the tunnel construction. Afterwards groundwater would not come to the normal levels because of the peat underground. And the houses subsided. Maastricht Municipality says they did not know about the peat. What to do is still being discussed in the City Council.
