Norway will clean the microplastics in tunnels and roads

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) aims to reduce emissions of microplastics from road traffic.

According to Statens Vegvesen researchers, the biggest source of microplastics is car tires (5,000 tonnes of microplastic per year). Then comes particles from road markings (100-300 tonnes) and asphalt wear (30 tonnes). Microplastics from road salt are ingorable they say.

These microplastics estimated to be 10,000 tonnes end up in the sea with tunnel washing water. Statens Vegvesen now works on measures to treat the tunnel washing water. The new tunnel project E18 will most likely to be the first tunnel from start having that system installed.

For the correct measures, Statens Vegvesen supports PhD thesis and cooperates with university researchers.
