Malta: A tunnel for Gozo: Is it the best solution? (or at what environmental cost?)
All that pro Malta-Gozo tunnel messages I see in this group, I think it needs some balancing.
Obviously I am also for building tunnels but not at all costs.
Read this to see what environmental and other problems it will create
Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg has insisted that no long shadow will be cast on the multi-million Gozo tunnel project.
For the plannedGozo tunnel -
"toll to be charged – and, consequently, the tunnel’s economic performance – is dependent on generating the maximum traffic possible. Maximising traffic underpins the very existence of the tunnel. This runs counter to the basic objective of the National Transport Master Plan 2025 which – in crystal-clear language – spells out the reduction of cars from our roads as the long-term objective of Malta’s National Transport Policy"

Maltese economy is heavily dependent on tourism. And that of smaller island of Gozo is even more so. What is next? Malta is linked to Italy via a tunnel? An island linked to other land via a tunnel will not be an island anymore IMHO...
