Austria: Schmitten Tunnel will be safer with an investment of 76.5 million euros for 12 new escape tunnels

    Carlos Kirschner

Zell am See's 5 kilometer long Schmitten Tunnel is used by six million vehicles per year. Authorities will spend 76.5 million euros to add 12 new connections (short tunnels) to the escape tunnels to make this important tunnel much more safer. Currently there are only two connections to the escape tunnels. This means that in case of an emergency, people will need to move shorter distances to reach to the nearest escape tunnel connection.

With other safety measures to be implemented, the total investment for a safer Schmitten Tunnel will be around 94.5 million euros.
