The excavation of the second tube for Tenda Tunnel between Italy and France will restart today (18 June).

3182 metre long Tenda Tunnel is a road tunnel under the Colle di Tenda mountain passage between France and Italy. When it was opened in 1882, it was the longest tunnel in the whole world and it remained the longest road tunnel in Europe until 1964.

The second tube (to be used only in the direction of Italy-France) is being built to prevent the current alternate driving direction. The new tube will have a track width of 6.50 meters (a lane of 3.50 meters, an emergency of 2.70 meters and a quay of 0.30 meters), while the existing tube will be assigned as the France-Italy direction and will be widened and expanded to the same size.

Tunnel construction was stopped in May 2017 when the Public Prosecutor of Cuneo seized the "Tenda bis" construction site as part of an investigation into fraud and aggravated theft; 17 suspects, including an Ansa official named. In April 2018,  Ansa has cancelled the contract of the contractor Fincosit for serious contractual breaches.

Before the fraud investigation and the cancellation of the contract with Fincosit, from Italian site already 1 kilometer and from the French site already 0.5 kilometer exvacation was completed.
