The 7,871 meters long Somport tunnel crosses the Pyrenees from Spain to France with 4,714 meters in Spain and 3,157 meters in France. The single track railway tunnel had been closed to railway traffic after a railway accident in 1970.  Spanish and French ministry of transports have signed an agreement for the contracting and execution of the study for the reopening of the Somport railway tunnel.

The works council part of UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores - General Workers Union, a very old labour union in Spain) is worried about the possible safety problems after contractor Matinsa starts work, Heraldo writes. Matinsa, has been awarded maintenance for 3 years for 14 million euros. UGT blames Matinsa for lack of dialogue and repeatedly fails to comply with the collective agreement. One of the issues is allegedly Matinsa's rejection to pay a danger bonus for 30 first intervention agents in case of fire etc. There said to be a court order for the payment. But Matinsa went to appeals court.
