While the tunnel option is getting more interest, a Swedish firm has approached the Scottish Government for a bridge link to Northern Ireland. Complete with "140 wind turbines to power hundreds of thousands of homes".
'The possibility of building a "fixed link" from south-west Scotland across the sea to Ulster is one of the projects being considered by a UK Government review.'

In the latest development, a review proposal by Network Rail chairman Sir Peter Hendy to conduct a review for the link has been approved by British PM Boris Johnson.
So far so good.
"Peter Hendy, who is chairing a government-commissioned review into ways to improve transport links between the home nations, said a sub-surface connection was more feasible in this instance. "

The results of a feasibility study into the construction of a combined bridge and tunnel connection at the narrowest 20-mile gap between the British mainland and Northern Ireland will be reviewed by Mr Johnson.
Under one version of Mr Johnson’s plan, the bridge would run from the Scottish coast over the trench, before becoming a tunnel for the final stretch to Northern Ireland.
